What is a Land Grant Opportunity scholarship?

The Land Grant Opportunity Scholarship is a competitive scholarship that supports the Ohio State University’s commitment to providing access to higher education for students from all backgrounds. It is awarded to incoming U.S. freshmen who are both Pell-eligible and demonstrate academic merit. The scholarship aims to award two recipients from each county, and a total of 176 students are awarded the scholarship each year.

To be considered for the scholarship, students must:

  • Meet the criteria for Pell eligibility (which means that they must qualify for the Federal Pell Grant, a need-based financial aid program funded by the U.S. Department of Education)
  • Also have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program
  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • Have a valid Social Security number, and
  • Demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA

Scholarship amount

The Land Grant Opportunity Scholarship is a full-ride scholarship that covers the entire cost of attending Ohio State University, including tuition and fees, room and board, textbooks, and other educational expenses. The scholarship helps to promote equal access to educational opportunities for Ohio residents who are incoming U.S. freshmen and meet the eligibility criteria.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Land Grant Opportunity Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be Ohio residents.
  • Be Pell-eligible.
  • Have a highly competitive academic record, including a GPA, class rank (top 10% of their high school class), rigor of high school curriculum, and ACT or SAT scores (if available).
  • Enroll full-time at the Columbus campus of Ohio State University for their first undergraduate degree.
  • Possess an excellent command of the English language.
  • Demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA.
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, measured at the end of the second year and annually thereafter.

Please note that international freshmen are not eligible for this scholarship or other merit-based scholarships at Ohio State University.

How to Apply for the Land Grant Opportunity Scholarship

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must complete the admission application by the early action deadline of November 1, 2023. Ohio State University automatically considers all completed admission applications for most merit awards for fall semester freshmen. Applicants must also complete the FAFSA to be eligible for maximum aid consideration.

Admission decisions are usually made by the end of January.

Therefore, focus on getting your admission application accepted before the early action deadline.

You will also need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be eligible for maximum aid consideration. You may receive an admission decision no later than the end of January.

Required Documents

To apply for admission and be eligible for the Land Grant Opportunity Scholarship, applicants must submit the following:

  • High school transcript
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Resume
  • Cover letter
  • Personal statement

Applicants must also file the FAFSA by Ohio State University’s priority date of February 1, 2023 to be considered for maximum financial aid.
