The Hubertus W. V. Willems scholarship is one of the many opportunities available for Black male students through the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Established in 1956, NAACP is the oldest, largest, and strongest civil rights organization in the United States, with the vision to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without racial discrimination.

Who is Hubertus W. V. Willems?

The Hubertus W. V. Willems scholarship was established in honor of the Late Hubertus W. V. Willems, a former president of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, in recognition for his contributions to the civil rights movement. Hubertus W. V. Willems was a prominent civil rights attorney and advocate, who dedicated his life to fighting for equal rights and justice for all. 

About Hubertus W. V. Willems Scholarship

Since its inception in 1986, the Hubertus W. V. Willems scholarship gives awards to students who embody Mr. Hubertus Willem’s commitment to social justice and equality. The scholarship is open to students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees. Through this program, students can attain equity in educational opportunities, which will prepare them for success in school, work, and life.

This scholarship is highly competitive, with hundreds of applications coming in each year from students across the States. Outstanding students who receive the scholarship have access to not only financial support but other resources such as a network of peers who share their interests in academia, a network of civil rights activists, and recognition of their accomplishments. This is a non-renewable scholarship opportunity.

Award amount

Each year, the scholarship committee selects ‌25 qualified male students to receive a one-time award of $3000. This scholarship fund covers college tuition, fees, books, and other education-related expenditure.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Hubertus W. V. Willems scholarship, a student has to meet all the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must be a member of the NAACP organization. This article will address some information on how you can become a member.
  • Must be below the age of 25 at the time of application submission.
  • Must be a Black or African American male. 
  • Must be a U.S citizen. 
  • Must be enrolled full-time or accepted to an accredited college or university in the United States
  • Must be a graduating high school senior, undergraduate student, or graduate student.
  • Must possess a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 system. 
  • Must exhibit an interest in pursuing careers in STEM, these include the field(s) of engineering, chemistry, physics, and/or mathematical sciences.
  • Must indicate financial need.
  • Students must also show leadership skills, community involvement, and a commitment to social justice.

Scholarship Application

As stated previously, you must be a member of the NAACP organization in order to be eligible to receive the  Hubertus W. V. Willems Scholarship.  NAACP membership comprises three sections namely: The Regular Annual membership, Lifetime membership, and the Corporate membership. The NAACP encourages anyone who desires to join to choose a membership type that best fits them.

Required Documents for Hubertus W. V. Willems scholarship 

As a full-fledged member of the NAACP, you can now apply for the Hubertus W. V. Willems scholarship. You will need the following documents to apply:

  • Copy of your NAACP membership card or membership application. 
  • Official transcript. 
  • Two recommendation letters from teachers or professors in your major field of study
  • An one page essay
  • Your student aid report.
  • Personal statement outlining your academic and professional goals.
  • Evidence of acceptance or full-time enrollment in an accredited college or University.

Application process

If you are a qualified student, you need to apply online with all necessary credentials through the NAACP’s Inspire Initiatives scholarship portal. You can access that portal here.

A scholarship committee made up of NAACP leaders scores applications, reviews transcripts, and selects recipients for approval. If selected, you will receive a notification from the Inspire scholarship portal. The selection committee’s decision is final and cannot be appealed.

Application Deadline

March 31 is the expected deadline to apply for the Hubertus W. V. Willems scholarship. Interested and eligible candidates can apply before the deadline.
