The Agnes Jones Jackson scholarship is a scholarship founded by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Who is Agnes Jones Jackson?

The Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship honors the late Agnes Jones Jackson who was a long-time NAACP member from the San Francisco branch. She served as the organization’s national director of education.

Purpose of the Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship

The Agnes Jones Jackson scholarship is one of the many ways in which the NAACP supports African American students. In addition to providing financial assistance, the NAACP also provides a range of resources and programs to help mold outstanding Black students who will achieve success in their school, work, and in their general life.

The Agnes Jones Jackson awards scholarships annually to members of the NAACP who are pursuing an undergraduate degree. These students have to demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to social justice. It is a non-renewable scholarship opportunity.

Scholarship amount

Every year, the Agnes Jones Jackson scholarship awards up to 22 scholarships in the value of $2,000 each to qualified students. This fund can cover expenses of tuition, books, and other miscellaneous educational expenditure.

Eligibility requirement

To qualify for the Agnes Jones Jackson scholarship, a student has to meet all the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must be a member of the NAACP organization. This article will address some information on how you can become a member.
  • Must be below the age of 25 during the time of application submission.
  • Must be an African American or a person of color. 
  • Must be a U.S citizen. 
  • Must be currently enrolled full-time or accepted to an accredited college or university in the U.S. 
  • Must be a graduating high school senior, undergraduate student, or graduate student.
  • Must possess a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 system. 
  • Must exhibit an interest in a relevant field of study where applicable.
  • Must indicate financial need.
  • Most importantly, students must display an affinity for social justice and activism, as this is the main core value on which the NAACP organization is founded. You can exemplify this through your involvement in community service, activism, or other similar activities.

Becoming a member of the NAACP

As stated previously, you must be a member of the NAACP organization in order to be eligible to receive the Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship. NAACP membership comprises three sections namely: The Regular Annual membership, Lifetime membership, and the Corporate membership. The NAACP encourages anyone who desires to join to choose a membership type that best fits them.

Application credentials for Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship

As a full-fledged member of the NAACP, you can now apply for the Agnes Jones Jackson scholarship. You will need the following documents to apply:

  • Copy of your NAACP membership card or membership application. 
  • Official transcript. 
  • Two recommendation letters from teachers or professors in your major field of study
  • An essay explaining your commitment to social justice and how you plan to use the education to make a positive impact in the community.
  • Your student aid report.
  • Evidence of acceptance or full-time enrollment in an accredited college or University.

Application process

If you are a qualified student, you need to apply online with all necessary credentials through the NAACP’s Inspire Initiatives scholarship portal. You can access that portal here.

A scholarship committee made up of NAACP leaders scores applications, reviews transcripts, and selects recipients for approval. If selected, you will receive a notification from the Inspire scholarship portal. The selection committee’s decision is final and cannot be appealed.
