About the Annexstad Family Foundation Leaders for Tomorrow scholarship

The Annexstad Family Foundation Leaders for Tomorrow scholarship was established by Al and Cathy Annexstad in 2012. Since then, the foundation has invested in deserving students from challenging backgrounds. The scholarship is only available to incoming first-generation and in-state students who show outstanding leadership potential through their participation in extracurricular activities and community involvement. The scholarship aims to empower exceptional students who will make a huge impact in their personal lives, in the lives of their fellow citizens, and in America as a whole. 

The Foundation collaborates with a group of carefully selected colleges and Universities that are among the nation’s most reputable institutions. These renowned institutions identify, enlighten and nurture these highly talented students into tomorrow’s leaders. This scholarship is part of a series of UMN scholarships we have highlighted. Objectives of the Annexstad Family Foundation Leaders for Tomorrow scholarship

The Annexstad Family Foundation Leaders for Tomorrow scholarship is a prestigious scholarship that aims to empower exceptional students who will dominate their chosen career fields and make a huge impact in their personal lives, in the lives of their fellow citizens, and in America as a whole. The goal is to provide emerging bold and qualified leaders who will contribute to the global economy of America and work hard to keep it on top. 

Scholarship benefits

The Annexstad Family Foundation Leaders for Tomorrow scholarship offers a total of $25,000 worth of scholarship awards, with $5,000 provided annually for Years 1 to 3 and a $10,000 balance awarded in either the fourth year of study or split evenly between the fourth and fifth years of study. These awards will help to cover academic expenses and minimize college debt. It is renewable under the condition that the recipients maintain a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Eligibility requirements

To qualify for the Annexstad Family Foundation Leaders for Tomorrow scholarship, candidates must:

  • Be a first-generation student 
  • Be a citizen of the United States, a permanent resident 
  • Come from humble and challenging backgrounds or beginnings. 
  • Have successfully triumphed over a notable personal and/or family hardship example: loss of one or both parents, foster care placement, physical disability, severe illness or injury, substance abuse, physical abuse, severe poverty, a victim of serious crime, etc. 
  • Be defined as students whose parents have neither over two years of after-high school education nor a post-secondary degree. 
  • Show financial need through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1 of their Senior year Enroll in an accredited college or University pursuing an undergraduate degree.
  • Enroll in an accredited college or University pursuing an undergraduate degree. We strongly advise that you check out institutions that collaborate with the Annexstad Family Foundation for this scholarship (details below) 
  • In the institution’s opinion, be in good academic and high moral standing and also possess a serious desire to excel in life for the betterment of personal life and society 
  • In the institution’s opinion, possess the ability to become an exceptional leader in his chosen field of endeavor in the future.

You can apply for admission into the University of Minnesota through any of the following platforms of preference: Golden Gopher or the Common Application. We strongly recommend that you submit only one application as a double submission will hinder your admission decision.

Selection Process

The accredited institutions select recipients for the Annexstad Family Foundation Leaders for Tomorrow scholarship following consultation with the Executive Director of the Annexstad Family Foundation. They vouch the recipients will meet the spirit of the working agreement between the institution and the foundation. The selected candidates will then participate in an interview process before the final award winners are chosen.
